Breakfast pizza

A couple weeks back, my husband was teasing Sophie, saying we were having pizza for breakfast. The kid loves her pizza. We started thinking, though, and came up with a way to make a breakfast version.

Here is what we came up with:

1 can large crescent rolls (Grands type)
1 can regular crescent rolls
12 eggs, scrambled
1 roll sausage, browned, crumbled, & drained
4-5 slices bacon, cooked and chopped (I use the pre-cooked microwave bacon and chopped straight from the package, approximately half-inch cuts.)
1 cup each shredded cheddar and mozzarella

On a large pizza pan (16 in), lay out the large crescent triangles first. Arrange them with the points in the middle, like a wheel. Two horizontal, two vertical, then the ones in the middle. Then use the smaller ones to fill in the gaps and press all the seams together.

Spread the scrambled eggs over the dough, then the sausage. Sprinkle the cheeses all over, and lay the bacon pieces over the pizza similar to how pepperoni is laid out.

Bake at 350 for 15 minutes, then cut into pieces and serve.

Enjoy!

Sophieisms

This post will not be exciting or insightful. It's main purpose is to record some of the expressions/mispronunciations Sophie uses so we'll remember them. But just for fun - how many can you figure out? Most are pretty plain, but there are a couple tough ones.

Don't mess with her chinch fries!

Hosey posey

Restinant

Panpakes

Chinch fries

Mudder

Shamwich

Nuffin

Muse-kick

Papize!

And I love how she uses a b sound in place of the v sound in words - bitamins, begetables, Beggie Tales.  One Sophieism I am sad to see fall off the list, though, is got-fir (forgot). I loved that! "I gotfir my drink!" "I gotfir bout it."

No more wasted time

Last night I read No More Wasted Time by Beverly Preston for the second time. I love this book SO much. It's a romance novel, but it's not the typical, annoying girl-meets-boy (who happens to be a gazillionaire), and poof they're in love and married within days. This does have the gazillionaire male lead, but even that is treated differently.

Warning: I can't talk about this without being all spoilery, so be aware. Although, it's a romance. Happily ever after and all that so you should go in knowing how it ultimately ends anyway.

Tess is the main character. She is a 45 year old mother of three children, ranging from ages 18-23. Her husband of almost 25 years died a year previously. The book opens in the airport, where she is sending her daughters off to Europe for a group tour, and she is leaving herself for Bora Bora. That was the favorite vacation spot of hers and her husband's, and she is taking his ashes there for a final goodbye and closure.

The first morning there, she encounters Tom, a famous movie actor, and the next morning finds out he has stolen her private boat tour that was their favorite activity on the island, and when she was going to release his ashes. She is livid, and unleashes her temper at him. Ultimately, they share the trip and she is glad he's there.

Moving on - Tess and Tom are very attracted to each other. She has read in the tabloids he doesn't commit, ever, and she isn't looking for a relationship. She feels like she was lucky enough to have her husband for so long, and to have been happy with him throughout their marriage. She doesn't think she'll find that again. They have a vacation fling, but as they get to know each other better it turns into more. Since she had suddenly lost her husband, Tess had developed a mantra of "life is too short to waste time being unhappy."

Here is what's different, though: Reality. Tess, understandably, deals with guilt about her husband. Also, she has her kids. True, they are mostly grown, but they are still part of her life and the "total package." Tom likes to do things for her, but she adamantly doesn't want his money. She and her husband were careful with theirs, and she has her own. She doesn't need him to take care of her, and has to learn to let him give her things. There is conflict with her kids, who only know the tabloid version of his life and want to protect her. But, they deal with everything together. He gives her space when she needs to grieve for her husband. They talk about him and her memories. Another big difference between other typical romance novels is the couple's ages. Tess is 45 and Tom is 49. They are mature enough to deal with relationship issues. Tess is a fireball, though, and one major conflict she actually drives over her phone to keep Tom from calling, but in the end they have a real discussion and work things out.

Ultimately, Tess and Tom have their happily ever after. Tom, who has never had a family of his own, develops relationships with all three of Tess's kids, and Tess blends seamlessly into Tom's A-list life. And the message of the book, reflected in the title, is universal, regardless of financial status: Life is short. Enjoy your time with your loved ones. Treat yourself well, and your loved ones well. And Tess and Tom's financial motto is a good one - give some, save a lot, and truly live with the rest.

Sixteen...

Tomorrow, my baby girl turns 16. My first born daughter, my mini-me, center of my universe for so long.

Wow.

This precocious little girl, who loved dressing up, all things pink and purple, Barbie, and Bear in the Big Blue House is now a sophomore in high school. She has a boyfriend, friends that drive, and just had an interview for her first "real" job. In just two short years, she'll be preparing to graduate high school and go on to college. She'll be leaving us to go out on her own, out in the big scary world.

It doesn't seem possible.

How can time move so quickly??

We are very proud of the young woman she's becoming, but at times I do miss my little girl.

Happy birthday, kiddo! We love you very much!

Nativity

This is our nativity set. The building is new, I got it last year, but the characters are older than I am. My parents got the set their first Christmas after they were married, 42 years ago.

When I was a child, my favorite thing was to set up our nativity, and then it was my favorite toy until it was put away for the year. When my husband & I were married, my parents passed it along to us.

When E was small, she'd play with the characters just like I did. Now, Sophie plays with it. It is still my favorite Christmas decoration.

First Christmases

These are the "Baby's First Christmas" ornaments for the girls. There are others, too - the Hallmark ornaments with trains, the baby alphabet block with a photo, fun ones like that. The one on the left is pewter and has been hanging around since 1998, E's first Christmas.

I tried to find another like it twelve years later for Sophie's first Christmas, and the silver teddy bear was the closest I could find.

Christmas stories

I love our Christmas decorations. Many of them are old, and almost all have their own story.

This ornament is one of my favorites. My husband and I bought it on our honeymoon. We spent that weekend in Chattanooga playing tourist- Ruby Falls, Rock City, Lookout Mountain, Chattanooga Choo-Choo, and the Tennessee Aquarium. I found this ornament in the aquarium's gift shop and loved it instantly. Every year it is carefully packed in its box, and thankfully after sixteen years it still is in perfect condition.

Stay tuned for more Christmas stories!

Double standards in advertising

K-Mart has caused quite a stir with their new holiday commercial for Joe Boxer. Television viewers are up in arms, saying it's indecent, inappropriate, and should be banned. Personally, I thought it was funny.
Is it suggestive? Certainly. Are the men covered? Definitely. Has the brand been known for being tongue-in-cheek? Always, especially before K-mart purchased it. But there are so many ads that are just as suggestive and even more sexual in nature. Why the fuss over this one?

This commercial is for perfume.
It is far racier than the Joe Boxer commercial, which is at least advertising underwear. The Joe Boxer commercial is being called brash, distasteful, offensive, and vulgar. Many of the general public are outraged! Comments on Kmart's facebook page say "Pull this ad, it has no place on public television." "What is wrong with you people? This is uncalled for!" "Kmart your new commercial sucks and is disgusting! I will never shop at your store again!" "Think of the children who will see this!" But no one is outraged over the Victoria's Secret commercials, the Hardees/Carls Jr commercials, the GoDaddy commercials, the various beer commercials. So why the double standard? Is it really okay for women to be portrayed as sex objects in advertising but not men? What are people afraid of?

Day 10

The toy commercials are out in full force. As a result, I am SO thankful for Santa Claus. Why? "Ask Santa" prevents this conversation from happening a thousand times a day:

"I want a Loud Crappy Toy!"
"No"
"Pweeeeeese! I want it!"
"No"
"But I neeeeeed it! Can I have it?"
"No"
And tears.

Instead, this exchange happens:

"I want that! Can I ask Santa?"
"Yes"
"Yay! I'll ask Santa!"

Because I KNOW that 99% of these things she's asking for will be forgotten. I feel no guilt at all with Santa being a type of scapegoat. She doesn't get that piano? "Sorry, sweetie, Santa couldn't carry it on his sleigh."

Days 8 and 9

Day 8

Day 9
I'm thankful for Saturday. Enough said.

Day 7

Today was spent at home, mostly on the couch on a heating pad. It seems Sophie is getting too big for me to carry to bed when she falls asleep in mine.

So today, I'm thankful for flexibility. I'm thankful for cell phones and internet connections that let me do my job from the couch. I'm thankful for ibuprofen and heating pads, Disney Junior and Netflix. I'm also thankful for little imaginations and cuddles and kisses.
